5 Natural Ways To Clarify Your Hair

Greasy hair? We’ve all been there. Just like in nature, it’s normal for our hair and scalp to move in and out of balance. Things like hormones, stress and changing weather can lead to excess oils in your scalp – cue limp, lifeless locks. Luckily, restoring swish-able shine can be a few simple steps away. Here are some natural ways to clarify your hair at home.

Clarify hair with apple cider vinegar

Since greasy, congested roots tend to be more alkaline, a quick rinse with acidic ACV can balance the pH of your hair and scalp. Plus, its naturally antibacterial, anti-fungal properties are great news for those prone to dandruff. Mix a few tablespoons with warm water, apply to your hair after shampooing and conditioning, and let it sit for a little while before rinsing out. Use this as a once-a-week detoxifier for softer, shinier, healthier looking hair.

Simplify your routine

Take it right back to basics and give your scalp some breathing space. For greasy hair types, the simpler the routine the better, because overloading on styling products and serums will lead to a hard-to-break cycle of oily buildup. And nobody wants that. Stick to a naturally-derived shampoo and conditioner that will gently cleanse your hair and scalp – our Lemon & Tea Tree range for example. Those with oily hair might find they have to wash every day, but gradually reducing this to once or twice a week could boost natural balance and shine.

Combat grease with lemon juice

Another way to clarify hair naturally is with the zesty goodness of lemon juice. Because of its acidic nature, it works much in the same way as apple cider vinegar. It can be used in the same way too. Mix the juice of two lemons with a cup of warm water and apply to your hair as a final grease-busting rinse.

Restore balance to your scalp with aloe vera

Is there anything this plant can’t do? Nourishing aloe vera extract can be applied directly to the scalp and roots as a way to clarify your hair naturally. It soothes, cools and moisturises all at once, but most importantly, it can help remove excess oil and product build-up too – making it one of the most gently cleansing ingredients around. Smother your strands in aloe that goodness (we couldn’t resist) with our Aloe Vera Shampoo and Conditioner, formulated with organic certified aloe vera leaf juice. We feel refreshed just thinking about it.

Remove build-up with baking soda

It turns out baking soda isn't just for baking – this store cupboard staple is super effective on oily, greasy hair types too. Baking soda is a totally natural chemical compound that can exfoliate the scalp, remove buildup and leave hair feeling clean and squeaky. How to wash your hair with baking soda? Mix four tablespoons with 3/4 cups water to make a paste, then apply from root to tip, leave for a few minutes and rinse.
