In 2022, Faith In Nature became the first company in the world to give Nature a voice and a vote, making nature a director on our board and embedding the rights of Nature into our decision making processes.
That move, which has come to be known as ‘Nature On The Board’, came from the realisation that every decision a business makes has an impact upon the natural world but, until that point, the natural world had no say in those decisions.
So we asked the question: How might business change if Nature had a voice and a vote?
And, working with leading Rights of Nature lawyers, we set about finding out. Each year, we publicly share our learnings here. So far, we’ve relaunched our entire product range with Nature as a director — meaning Nature’s guardians have been present throughout the entire product development process. Our approach to sourcing has changed. Our culture has changed. But most importantly of all, an understanding of what’s possible has changed.
We continue to advocate for other organisations to do this too, Increasingly, others are doing. We’ve freely shared our entire model here and our Brand Director, Simeon, has written his book ‘Nature’s Boardroom’, which hopes the uptake that we believe is so clearly needed.
AND SINCE LAUNCHING, WE’RE DELIGHTED TO SAY WE’RE NO LONGER THE ONLY COMPANY TO HAVE DONE THIS
In fact, there are around 25 organisations currently working with a version of this model. That’s obviously not yet enough to cause the major systemic change that Nature needs, but it’s a huge step forward for what we now understand is possible.
For anyone wanting to do the same, we’ve open sourced the model which is freely available here.
And to answer ongoing questions, we publish annual Nature on the Board (NOTB) reports, cataloguing all decisions made, all learnings, and all the changes we’ve noticed.
3 YEARS OF NATURE
ON THE BOARD
WORKING WITH NATURE ON THE BOARD AND REFINING IT AS WE GO IS A TREMENDOUS PRIVILEGE AND A BEAUTIFUL THING TO BEHOLD
We share as much as we can as often as we can because we really want this to continue snowballing. But there’s much too much to say about it here, which is why our Brand Director, Simeon Rose, has also written a book about it. It lays down the why, the what, the how of how Nature on the Board works, together with real-world case studies and a vision for the future where Nature has a voice and a vote. ‘Nature’s Boardroom’ is published by Bristol University Press and is available now.
The more boards appoint Nature, the more of a voice Nature has. Here's the legal low-down on exactly how you can do as we have. Please share!
After nearly fifty years in the natural products movement, we've learnt a thing or two along the way and we've certainly got plenty of stories to share.
