How to Get Thicker Hair: Effective Tips & Advice

Naturally, our hair tends to grow more slowly the older we get. And although we haven’t found a miracle formula for thicker hair (yet), we do have some tips that’ll help your hair look fuller, thicker and more luscious for longer.

What causes thin hair?

Biologically, the thickness of our hair relates to the width of each individual strand. This is what gives you either fine, medium or coarse hair. The thickness of your hair can also be defined by the density, or in simple terms, how many hairs per square centimetre you have on your scalp.

We start to lose thickness as we age. Other factors such as hormones, lifestyle and environment all play an important role in the thickness of your strands. The most common form of hair loss is male-pattern baldness or female-pattern hair loss (a type of alopecia). This is where the hair gradually thins out from the scalp because of age and hormone changes.

Thinning hair can also be the result of poor haircare and damage from tools and harsh chemicals. That’s why it’s always best to stick with naturally derived ingredients and develop a kind, gentle approach to your haircare that doesn’t upset the natural balance of your scalp.

Daily habits to make your hair thicker

For those who would like thicker hair, there are some things you can do to give your hair a little helping hand and restore the natural balance of things.

1. Eat a balanced diet

A varied, healthy diet is the key to a balanced scalp – and healthy hair = thicker hair. Supplements are great if you need a little extra vitamin support for things like collagen and Vitamin D (especially during winter), but a natural, varied diet is always best, especially if you have a medical condition. Start with vegan foods high in protein like legumes (lentils, beans, tofu, tempeh), nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts) and seeds. And the best thing about going natural? No nasty side effects.

Iron, zinc, and biotin are also essential for healthy hair growth (and your overall health). Focus on foods like fortified cereals, dark greens (such as kale and spinach), and whole grains.

2. Hair and scalp care

Try washing your hair less often (not something shampoo companies say every day, is it?!). This’ll give the natural oils from your scalp to travel down the strands and keep your hair nourished and hydrated for longer. Try sticking to washing your hair every 2-3 days for good hair health and use dry shampoo in between washes.

When it comes to shampooing, focus your product on your scalp and use small, circular motions with your fingertips to work the product in (like a mini scalp massage) from your hairline to the back of your head to get the maximum cleaning benefit. This will also help stimulate the hair follicles on your scalp, which could lead to healthier, thicker hair.

Try to avoid sulphate-containing shampoos, which can strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage. Instead, opt for gentle products that can help maintain moisture (like our hydrating coconut shampoo) and keep your hair looking thicker and fuller for longer. Castor oil is also a great option for added hydration.

If you suffer from hair loss or male pattern baldness

If you suffer from thyroid issues or male pattern baldness, there isn’t much you can do in the way of haircare to prevent further hair loss or hair thinning. The trick here is to embrace your natural hair and style it differently to reduce the appearance of hair loss, rather than trying to cure it.

3. Brushing techniques

There can’t be much in brushing your hair, right? Wrong. Mindful brushing throughout the week will leave your strands softer, distribute your hair oils evenly and avoid those pesky breakages.

Depending on your hair type, brushing your wet hair slowly with a wide-tooth comb a few times a week will distribute the natural oils from your scalp down the full length of your strands (especially if you have fine hair), leaving your hair hydrated and naturally nourished for longer, promoting thicker, longer growth.

Top tip: wash your hairbrush once a week to remove dead skin and avoid build-up on your freshly washed hair.

4. Regular haircuts

We know it might sound counterintuitive, but try getting your hair cut regularly. Depending on your hair growth cycle, it’ll help remove any split ends and help your hair look thicker. As well as giving a fuller look, it’ll allow the new hair strands to grow to their full potential without being stunted by dead or inactive strands for maximum hair thickness. The more damaged your hair is, the less likely it is to grow to its full, natural potential.

5. Limit hot styling tools

It can be tempting to reach for the curling iron or to blow-dry your hair, but the extra heat can cause significant damage and give you dry hair, preventing it from looking full and healthy. Either ditch the heat tools like straighteners completely or try using them on a lower heat setting and with a heat protectant (or hairdryers on the cool setting). Better still, try letting your hair air dry. It may take your hair longer to dry, but trust us, your hair – and scalp – will thank you for it.

6. Style your hair differently

Not for everyone, but sometimes a change in hairstyles is all you need. We're talking a blunt cut for extra texture and added layers. These are relatively quick and effective ways to increase the appearance of thicker, fuller hair without heat styling – you can find styles that work for you on social media and haircare blogs. Highlights and lowlights also give the appearance of depth and texture to your hair. Ultimately, sticking with your natural shade and utilising strong cuts and styling products for added texture can really thicken hair and add some dimension with minimal effort. If you want your hair to look more voluminous, avoid having your hair up in ponytails or tied back; this will automatically give the appearance of fuller, thicker hair.

7. Use the right products

For thick hair, you need the right hair products. Luckily, we know a thing or two about those.

Avoiding harsh ingredients is a must if you’re looking for a healthy scalp and thick hair growth. Natural origin formulas that are free from parabens are a great starting point. The Rosemary Shampoo & Conditioner Set is made with 99.5% natural origin ingredients (including rosemary oil – known to help stimulate the scalp, which can increase blood circulation), so you can avoid anything unwanted ending up clogging your follicles. Plus, with our Rosemary Conditioner 5L refill, a moisture boost is always on hand when you need it most (and it reduces plastic waste, too. Win-win).

Finding a nourishing, hydrating haircare product that works for thicker hair can be a challenge. Luckily, we have the perfect natural choice: Shea & Argan Conditioner. Expertly formulated with our base blend of three organic active naturals and made with 99.5% natural origin ingredients, this nourishing conditioner will help keep your curls and waves hydrated for longer, giving the appearance of thicker, fuller hair.

Finding the Right Balance

For thicker hair, try avoiding those harsh formulas that strip your hair of its natural oils and dodge the heated styling tools. Plus, try not to focus on the things you can’t control, like your age and hormone changes.

Finding your own, natural rhythm with a haircare routine is key to helping your strands feel nourished and healthy, which in turn will promote thicker, healthier hair in the long run.
