With bleaching, perming and styling becoming the norm for most of us, there is always a price that our hair has to pay and many of us are left wondering how to repair our damaged hair.

So what are the most common causes of damaged hair?

Hair bleach reaches the hair cuticle with chemicals and removes the natural pigment of your hair. The hair therefore becomes weaker and can look dull and suffer from split ends. Styling the bleached hair on a regular basis is also highly challenging for your hair.

Perming has two results – either straightening or curling the hair. A perm breaks the inner bonds of hair and re-forms them in a different way (either curly or straight). A perm has a similar effect on the hair as bleaching does in that it damages the hair and makes it look dull, brittle and dry.

Hairdryers and heating irons change the hydrogen bonds that holds hair together. Blow drying or using hair straighteners on a regular basis can damage and weaken the hair.

How To Repair Your Damaged Hair

Ready to repair your damaged hair? Try the following tips:

  • Cut off the damaged ends
  • Reduce your heated styling regime until your hair begins to recover

  • Avoiding using hair extensions where possible, if you must use them then make sure you do not pull on the follicle too hard

  • Handle your hair gently when washing and drying

  • Shampoo your hair no more than once or twice a week to let your natural sebum oil nourish your hair

  • Brush your hair from ends to follicle so not to put extra stress on the hair

  • Do not brush your hair when it is wet as it is more fragile when wet

  • Condition your hair every time you wash it

  • Consider a deep conditioning treatment every few weeks

  • Try a hair mask - for dull hair use one tbs of honey and one egg white, frizzy hair should use one blended banana or avocado, dry hair should use one tbs of milk or yoghurt

  • When finishing your hair style use argan, moroccan or jojoba oil to protect it and stop frizzing

  • Massage your scalp in a circular motion – you can even use coconut, almond, jojoba, tea tree or lavender oil

  • Use natural hair products – stick with sulphate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner
