Three top tips for holiday tresses

Everyone loves a holiday – and in a fast-paced modern world, they’re also really important to give ourselves time to recharge, but they can do the opposite to your hair! Sudden changes in diet (another round of cocktails, anyone?), humidity, heat from the sun and changes in water quality all impact the condition of your locks. There are things you can do to make sure your hair has a happy holiday too…

1. Treat your hair like you’d treat your skin

Generally, we’re pretty good at looking after our skin, perhaps because we see it all the time. Take a lead from your skincare routine, hair also needs to be hydrated and protected from the sun.

When you’re slapping the sun cream on or grabbing a kaftan to cover your shoulders, do the same for your hair. There are lots of products out there that offer sun protection for your tresses and it’s the perfect excuse to rock some headwear!

Aftercare is just as important too; we all know to moisturise our skin after a day on the beach, so choosing a hydrating shampoo and conditioner to do the same for your hair.

Coconut has a high moisture retention capacity as well as cooling benefits (and a fabulous holiday scent), so using a coconut conditioner after a long, hard day topping up your tan is like giving your hair a drink of water.

2. Work with the water

This one’s a little trickier and requires a bit of forward planning, but it’s worth it! Soft water and hard water have very different results when you’re washing your hair. Soft water can make it feel super soft whereas hard water may cause it to become dry and dehydrated. It all depends on what type of hair you have – if your hair doesn’t get on well with being over-hydrated it’ll become a limp, lifeless nightmare!

Pack products that will suit both your hair AND the water wherever you’re going and if you can’t find out any information about the water quality, prepare for both!

3. Don't forget your scalp

It’s not easy under all that hair – you can’t slather on a moisturiser – but shampoos are designed with both the scalp and hair in mind, so picking the right one can make all the difference. Using an aloe vera shampoo not only soothes and hydrates, it can help to promote skin renewal, so your scalp will be back to normal as quickly as possible.
