Salvia officinalis
Salvia is from the Latin 'salvere', meaning 'to heal' or 'to save' which is a clear indication of its properties and value. There are over 500 species of this perennial shrub in cultivation, but only a few are exploited commercially.
A purifier and tonic, it is utilised as an anti-dandruff preparation being beneficial to both the skin and scalp, and it is also a natural insect repellent. It can be used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and acne, and its use as a fragrance is well known.
It combines well with other ingredients such as cocoa and rosemary.
